Access Time
The time interval between the instant when a computer or control unit calls for a transfer of data to or from a storage device and the instant when its operation is completed is the access time. Thus, access time is the sum of the waiting and transfer times.
Accumulator
A storage area in memory is used to develop totals of units or amounts being compiled.
ADSL – (Asymmetric Digital Subscribers Line )
Sometimes referred to as Broadband, ADSL is a connection available from Telecom Companies using existing lines with fast download & upload speeds. It works by splitting your phone line signal into two separate channels, one for normal voice usage and the other for data usage, this is achieved by placing a splitter on the existing phone line to enable multifrequency communication. It can reach speeds of up to 9Mbit per second for downloading and currently up to 640Kbit per second upload speed. Another advantage of having an ADSL line is you do not miss calls while you’re online, as both voice and data can be transferred at the same time.
AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port)
An interface that allows a graphics card to access memory directly along with the wider bandwidth helps improve graphics performance. AGP has now come to replace a lot of PCI video cards due to its superior performance. Most modern motherboards have an AGP slot. Some motherboards come with an AGP graphics card built-in.
ALGOL (Algorithmic Language)
A standard procedure-oriented language for expressing computational algorithms developed as a result of international cooperation. ALGOL is designed to serve as a means for communicating computational procedures, as well as to facilitate the preparation of such procedures for execution on any computer.
Alphanumeric Code
Code that represents numbers, letters, punctuation marks, and special characters.
Animated Graphic
An animated image is produced by means of a series of computer images; for example, a moving cartoon or diagram. Animated graphics add interest to a presentation and use much less disk space than video images.
ANSI-American National Standards Institute
An American body responsible for the standardization system. Since 1981, ANSI establishes the United States industrial standards and its primary task is to determine hardware and software standards. It is the US representative of ISO.
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
Byte-oriented coding system based upon the use of seven-bit codes and used primarily as formats for data communication.
Archive
To store copies of computer programs and data to search against loss in the event that the original materials are deleted or damaged. Archived files can be sent to tapes, floppy disks, or another computer.
